reports the antique frescoes paintings on the wall of a house located at the Lido di Gozzano. This is not a palace or a villa, but a
modest and little building hosting these beautiful frescoes (executed in the sixteenth
century, with the emblems of the Bishops of Novara and a devotional portrait of the Mother
of Christ). It's not unusual to find small and unknown "gems" like this on Lake
Orta. Nothing flashy, but one of the several testimonies of the ancient history of this
lake, for centuries under the exclusive domain of the Bishops of Novara, with its own
rules and laws different from all the surrounding territories. It is not a coincidence that
the political and administrative center was Orta San Giulio (with its antique Palazzotto)
and the symbol of Orta S.G. (visible in the gardens of its current City Hall) is a small
garden (Hortus Conclusus) enclosed by high walls.
This lake lived for centuries off the surrounding world and was the last piece of Italy
annexed by Savoy after 1861.
The lido di Gozzano was the place where the Bishops of Novara used to ship going to the
Island of St. Giulio. This is the reason of frescoes painted here.
